The start of a new product era

Four possible battery configurations from 600 to 1050 Wh

We designed the frames of our new e-MTBs with the goal of a light look and the most agile trail handling. Therefore we opted for the compact 600 Wh battery and a slim silhouette as the main design. The battery can be removed through the down tube using pivot removal instead of slide-out. For riders who need more battery capacity, the frames can also hold the bigger 800 Wh battery – with only a different down tube cover. Moreover, all frames in all sizes are compatible with the 250 Wh range extender, leading to four possible battery configurations from 600 to whooping 1050 Wh.

Carbon look meets aluminium frame

With ground and levelled weld seams in the head tube area and around the semi-integrated shock mount, the JAM² and its siblings could easily be mistaken for carbon bikes. And as we all know, most customers – except a minority with a weakness for weld seams – would probably go for a carbon e-MTB, even if it was the same weight. The reason is obvious, they prefer the sleek design. Due to its price, carbon bikes are out of reach for the average e-MTB buyer, though. This is the reason, we tasked our designers with creating an aluminium frame that could be mistaken for a carbon one. Making the premium look accessible to the broader masses.

Use case-based design

For the new FOCUS e-MTBs, we wanted to truly meet the demands of the different user groups of e-mountain bikes. The results are bikes that might look more alike but are truly different and cater to three distinct use cases. As an example: we say goodbye to the suspension travel categories. Why should an e-mountain bike like the THRON² be limited by its travel, when you can use variables like kinematics, geometry, and specs to turn it into the perfect bike for epic alpine tours? That’s why it now has 150/140 mm of travel, only 10 mm less than our trail all-rounder JAM² and 20 mm less than our trail shredder FOCUS SAM².

Demanding ground, steep climbs and rough downhills are the natural habitats of e-enduro bikes. It doesn’t matter if you are a pro biker or an ambitious e-mountain bike rider with an e-enduro things will heat up. E-bikes like the FOCUS SAM² are perfect for fast descents, exposed trails, and rugged terrain. But they also love challenging climbs, for which a powerful e-MTB drive delivers plenty of power.

What motor is the best for a full-suspension e-MTB?

But it’s not only about power. If riders want to go for technical trails they need a motor that delivers power sensibly and that can adapt easily to the power they need. That’s what is needed for steep climbs and ramps. For everyone who is going for fast rides, it’s important that the engine is not giving you motor resistance – when it’s turned off or the support stops above 25 km/h.

What motor is the best for a full-suspension e-MTB?

We count on the Bosch Performance Line CX e-drive. The THRON² and FOCUS SAM² are equipped with the renowned, reliable Bosch motor gen. 4. From 2024, the JAM² will be equipped with the revised gen. 5 of the Performance Line CX. Previous JAM² models, which you can find in the outlet, are equipped with Bosch Performance Line CX gen. 4 or Shimano EP801.

How big should my battery be?

With some fast checks, you can find out which battery will be the right one for you. First, you should know: more watt-hours means more range. But the weight (rider+baggage+bike) has a big impact on the real range of your battery. As well as your chosen support level or the shape of the terrain and many more factors. If you push the energy consumption of your engine by riding a lot of uphills, the battery will empty quicker, if your cycling in flat terrain in eco mode, it will last longer.
