February bike of the month

The combination of perfect design and sophisticated technology makes the Raven 3.0 a dream bike. Read on and discover the details FOCUS product managers have developed to enable you to get the best performance out of this bike in any situation.

The 2011 model year sees FOCUS branching out, introducing a real dash of colour into its bikes. Whereas FOCUS teams Bad Salzdetfurth racing and MIG are competing with the Raven 2.0 frame painted in the FOCUS colours red and black, the Raven 3.0 has brought a great sense of playfulness to the scene. The high-end carbon frame is coloured blue and white, a colour combination which is continued throughout the components, right down to the smallest detail. The FOCUS product managers have added blue highlights everywhere: from handlebars, handlebar stem and seatpost, grips, saddle and SRAM X.0 groupset decoration, up to and including the cable sleeve.

No less impressive than its colourful design is the technology behind the Raven 3.0. The tried and tested SRAM X.0 gear components and the FSA SLK parts are proof beyond doubt that the bike functions perfectly. However, new technologies have been used as well. A thru axle connects the Rock Shox fork to the front wheel, a technique which was more popular with freeriders than with racing cyclists until now. Yet the thru axle makes the bike much more rigid and the action of the brake disc therefore smoother. This is worth its weight in gold in racing, as now the front wheel hardly twists at all, even when the rider brakes extremely hard. The bottom line is that results cannot only be seen in the test lab; the necessary safety margin is also ensured in races.

The double bottom bracket is yet another feature that underlines the bike's total suitability for racing. With 42/28 on 11-32 teeth, the gear ratio is slightly 'narrower' than with a conventional triple crank. The maximum gear ratio of 28–32 teeth means that anyone who is not riding in the Alps and who can apply a little more pressure on an ascent will cope well almost anywhere. The Raven 3.0 is a perfect combination of fun colours and superior technology – the ideal bike on which to get the 2011 racing season off to a flying start.
