Retail branded winter bike: Mares AX 4.0
For cyclists wanting to continue serious training through the winter months, there is virtually no way round the need for a winter bike with mudguards and wider tyres. In the past, bikes like this were largely branded ‘home-made’. Now, for the first time, FOCUS is launching a concept bike in the form of the Mares AX 4.0. Tour magazine took a close look at this all-rounder.
Mudguards, wide cross tyres from Continental and 10-speed Shimano Tiagra gears form the basic set-up of the Mares AX 4.0. This is all mounted on an aluminium cyclo-cross frame to create an all-purpose winter weapon. Whether you're riding on wet roads, woodland trails or even a short trip off the beaten track, the Mares AX 4.0 is equipped to deal with almost anything. The editorial team at Tour shares this view and is clearly impressed that FOCUS has a bike of this type in its product range. The sturdy wheelset and mechanical disc brakes know just how to impress.
The Mares AX 4.0 was tested individually and the whole test report can be found in: Tour, issue 12-2011
