Steffen Justus leaps towards the finishing line in Sydney...
... demonstrating that he is fighting fit for the Olympic season and securing the title of our April sportsman of the month
Four months to go until the London Olympics finally begin. Four more months to prepare for the 7th of August 2012. The triathlon in London’s Hyde Park on that day is the absolute crux of the season for FOCUS sportsman Steffen Justus. Over the 1500 m swim, 40 km cycle and 10,000 m run he will be competing against the best athletes in the world for a medal and a place on the podium in the Olympic triathlon.
As part of this journey towards London, Steffen has recently spent four weeks training and competing in Australia. On the 11th of April he sent greetings back to Germany via his blog (www.steffen-justus.de), and described his preparation and recovery on the Sunshine Coast as ideal. With an eye on the World Championship Series that opened three days later in Sydney, he declared a top-20 place as his target – in other words, a confirmation that he meets the Olympic qualifying standard. Even before the end of the day of the competition in Sydney, news was coming in on the news tickers in Germany that Steffen had taken that leap towards the finishing line and come in first. On Sunday the 15th of April Justus celebrated his 30th birthday. At the same time, the sports press and the wider public were toasting a new world-class German triathlete.
FOCUS congratulates Steffen on his birthday, wishing him all the best for the coming year and especially the very best of luck for success in London!
