Tenth place in European Cyclocross Championship – despite collision
Sabrina Schweizer is FOCUS sportswoman of the month for November
Not the best start to a European championship race: Sabrina Schweizer was involved in a collision in the very first round (through no fault of her own) and fell back to 17th place. The fact that she had advanced back to 10th place by the end of this race on 6th November 2011 in Lucca, Italy – and thus achieved her best international championship result to date – is directly attributable to Sabrina’s excellent attitude.
“BEATING YOUR TOUGHEST COMPETITORS MEANS CONQUERING YOURSELF.” These are the words written on the 21-year-old’s website, words which were impressively put into action in international competition. Arriving with high expectations – Sabrina had already clocked up three cyclocross victories in October 2011 – a collision like that could have thrown some athletes out of the race altogether. But not this sportswoman from the Bavarian Allgäu, who has consistently improved over the last few years and is today one of the top-ranking women in the German cyclocross sport.
On her route to success, Sabrina has attracted and continues to attract many supporters. Besides her cycling club “Rad Union Wangen” and her team FOCUS M.I.G., Sabrina also enjoys particular support from her family. In the Schweizer family, cyclocross takes a central role. Training takes place five to seven times a week, usually in a sibling team. Indeed, Sabrina owes her famous racing tenacity to training with her brother Michael, one year her junior. “This gives me a major advantage over other female cyclists who train alone or with other women. I train a lot more with men so that I have tougher opponents in training than in racing”, reveals the FOCUS sportswoman when describing the secret of her success. And the fact that brother Michael is not just any training partner is clearly shown by the results list of the aforementioned European championships: Michael Schweizer took 14th place in Lucca as best German male cyclist.
On the subject of materials, Sabrina says: “A good racing cyclist needs just three things: talent, ambition and a FOCUS bike!”
